Thank you for this. So many times I have not even finished the first step because I knew I didn't want to take the second or third one. The story of the play, "Wit", illustrates this as well. The playwright had something to say and she said it. She knew she wasn't going to write another — unless she had something to say that was just as compelling.
There is an edition of the play, probably published after she started receiving awards, that includes a preface with the whole process she used to develop the play — very informative for non-theater people. And a wonderful interview by Charlie Rose of the author in which she explains her motivations — it may still be online somewhere.
Thank you for reminding folks that Billy Joel is from Long Island. Long live Long Island and the artists it propagates. Of which, I consider myself one.
