I've had this in my inbox to comment on it for a hot minute now - HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And congratulations! It's so exciting to have finished draft one :). I think there's definitely always a demand for short and wonderful novels. "Convenience Store Woman" by Sayaka Murata immediately comes to mind. 160 pages of (great) pure weird vibes.
I've mentioned this before, but I'll say it again: you ever want some prose-shaped eyeballs, I'd love to read a draft you're ready for feedback on!
Happy Belated Birthday, Mickey. I’m getting ready ’to enter the 5th floor’ as well in December. Class of ‘92!! Congrats on the novel. When you get there, please consider me as your audiobook narrator. I still use ‘The Fix Up’ to introduce newbies to what I do. All the best. 🥳🎉🎁
Thank you for your continued wit, wisdom, kindness, and humor. I hear your voice as I read this and felt like we were having a conversation. I’m always looking forward to what you’ll create next. You’ve a beautiful mind. Keep sharing! Until we see each other again, amigo….
Many congratulations, Mickey! As someone who has been working through my first novel, I can really appreciate the effort it took to get that far! Of course, the editing process is in its way, even more arduous. But mine is in the 90K range, so maybe it won't be as bad for you. Plus with your longtime experience as a screenwriter, you likely are starting with a lean narrative anyhow! If you have any leads on beta readers or possible editors, I won't say no!
Hey! No doubt you're going to be great at this, and I have so much respect (and empathy) for you landing in the 90k range. Twice as long has got to be twice as hard, lol. And yes, I feel like my screenwriting background helped in a lot of ways but it also kept me in my head a lot, especially because of that lean narrative! I'll let you know as I plow forward!
Happy Birthday Mickey! Sending you all the birthday wishes from I-town! I so enjoy reading your newsletter and just want to say CONGRATULATIONS!! on finishing your "first" novel! How truly amazing!! I am really looking forward to reading it once you have loved on it enough to share with the rest of us! Enjoy your day and your hard-earned accomplishment! :)
Mickey, I can't tell you enough how much I admire your creativity, courage, persistence and overall attitude. I'm all up for buying this book as soon as it's for sale. Just let me know. I'm closing in on 78 now and I'm still trying to keep my attitude up. Reading your stuff helps a lot. Happy Birthday and may you have many more and many successes with your writings both in novel and screenplay formats.
Scott, thank you! You are an inspiration, and I know you've been down this road with writing a number of books. Did you also feel a kind of runner's high when you got to the end of your first one?
I sure did. It even felt better after I sold some. I am a speaker and so sometimes the people hiring me to speak would but some of my books for the participants. I didn't get rich but I made something and it felt cool to know they were helping. And by the way you really inspire me. Having your work on national TV is really something. Keeping your wits about you in that probably crazy environment also impresses me a great deal. You write really well and you've got a great spirit. Keep it up!!
CONGRATS Mickey on the novel and happy fiftieth! Your greatest work and joy is in front of you! If you're looking for beta readers at any point, please feel free to shoot it my way.
Great column. Happy birthday!
