Okay, I’m still 49 as I write this on Sunday, but by the time you read it I’ll be 50. It’s a big milestone, turning fifty. But, right now I’m celebrating another milestone. As of August 5th, 10:26 AM, I finished my first novel. After two years of false starts and sprints, of abandoning it and dusting it off again multiple times, I completed a longtime goal of writing a book.
I've had this in my inbox to comment on it for a hot minute now - HAPPY BIRTHDAY! And congratulations! It's so exciting to have finished draft one :). I think there's definitely always a demand for short and wonderful novels. "Convenience Store Woman" by Sayaka Murata immediately comes to mind. 160 pages of (great) pure weird vibes.
I've mentioned this before, but I'll say it again: you ever want some prose-shaped eyeballs, I'd love to read a draft you're ready for feedback on!

Many congratulations, Mickey! As someone who has been working through my first novel, I can really appreciate the effort it took to get that far! Of course, the editing process is in its way, even more arduous. But mine is in the 90K range, so maybe it won't be as bad for you. Plus with your longtime experience as a screenwriter, you likely are starting with a lean narrative anyhow! If you have any leads on beta readers or possible editors, I won't say no!
